Frequently Asked Questions

  • I’ve never been a NED - where do I start?

We’d always suggest the best place to start is on one of our Foundation Courses. You’ll get a rocket-fuelled start to your career as a NED with the basics you need to shine in the boardroom, while also learning soft skills and how to plan your NED career. The course is designed with plenty of time for networking, so we hope that you’ll form lasting friendships with others in your cohort to help you along the way. Once you’ve done the Foundation Course you’ll be able to access a wide range of other support from us, including career planning, mentoring, and introductions to boards that need you.

  • I am looking for a new board member - can you help?

We’d love to chat. Our Director Match service is powered by humans, not AI. All of us at LEV-8 take time to know each of our cohorts as individuals. We’ll suggest a short list of candidates for you who’ll be right for your board. We also provide board assessments to work out where your gaps are in your existing board.

  • I am on a board already but we’ve not had any formal training - can you help?

Yes - we can run bespoke training for you. That might be a tailored version of our Foundation Course to ensure everyone on the board is on the same page. Or it could be something just for you - for example, a ransomware simulation exercise, a half-day course on understanding AI, or a deep dive into how to manage your intellectual property. We also provide board assessments to work out where your gaps are in your existing knowledge base.

  • I am in a board and we’d like ransomware training - can you help?

Yes - we do half day or full day ransomware simulations. One of our course leaders has trained around 400 people through similar programs. Just contact us and we’ll get more details over to you.

  • All of this sounds amazing, but I’m currently out of work.

We’ll do our best to help if we can. We provide two bursaries on each Foundation Course based on merit where there’s need. We’d still need you to invest something, but we don’t tell the rest of the cohort who the bursary beneficiaries are. If you’ve recently been made redundant, your former employer might be prepared to pay for the course - we’re talking to leading outplacement counsellors too. There may also be other sources of funding in your local area. We’ve all faced life challenges - don’t be afraid to ask.

  • What about childcare?

We’re working hard to make our courses as accessible as possible. We know that childcare can be a barrier. For obvious reasons we can’t accommodate children on our courses but if your childcare arrangements let you down we’ll allow you to swap courses without penalty if you give us 24 hours notice. We’re also speaking to leading childcare providers about special provision for our courses and throughout your NED career - watch this space.

  • Why don’t you do online training for the Foundation Course?

Because we don’t think it’s as effective. There’s real value in a group of like minded but different people being in the same room together at the same time. We like the sense of mutual support our courses provide, and we hope you’ll make friends for life amongst your cohort. Being with you face to face allows our course leaders to learn about you, and find the roles we think would be perfect for you.

  • We’re a private equity investor looking for new board members - can we talk?

Absolutely - just contact us. We work with funders to diversify their boards and we can match you to the right candidates. On the rare occasions when we’ve not already got someone to match your needs, we’ll find them, train them and support them for you.

  • I’ve heard you have special skills in helping NHS Trusts - is that true?

It is. One of our founders, Dr. Nish Sood, has helped NHS Trusts of all shapes and sizes. As a former NHS doctor himself, he knows the special issues with healthcare, and we’ve been actively involved in all aspects of healthcare management. Other members of our team have healthcare experience including helping trusts, dental practices, private healthcare clinics, GP practices, and a leading medical association.

  • I chair the board of a mid-size manufacturing company and we’re struggling with AI - can you help?

Yes - just get in touch. One of our course leaders, Jonathan Armstrong, is an established expert in AI and has written a book on technology risk. In the short term, we can help with some board training on AI focused both on risk and reward. In the medium term, you might need to consider a board alignment assessment to work out whether you have gaps on your board that need plugging - and if there are gaps, we can help fill them too.

  • Do you offer training outside the UK?

Yes - our course leaders have led board training outside the UK including in the UAE, Brazil and Switzerland. We don’t yet offer our public access Foundation Courses outside the UK, but we do offer tailored support wherever there’s a need.

  • Can I franchise your courses?

We’re sorry, but that’s not what we do. All of our course leaders are people we know and trust. We’re concentrating on the quality of what we do, not on fast growth.

  • Do you allow dogs on your Foundation Courses?

We’re sorry, but that’s not something we can accommodate just yet (with the exception of guide dogs). We know that our four-legged friends are important, but on our public courses we need to cater for everyone on the course. We can run tailored courses with dogs in the room.
