How to get ahead of AI Literacy requirements

The EU AI Act is reshaping the liability landscape around AI, and businesses must adapt to its requirements. Jonathan Armstrong’s recent article for the European Business Review outlines exactly what this entails.

As of February 2, 2025, all organisations operating in or offering AI-enabled services to the EU have a legal requirement to ensure their workforce is AI literate, as per Article 4 of the AI Act. This includes not only developers, but also employees in HR, marketing, customer service, and beyond. Businesses cannot afford to ignore this - non-compliance can create liability issues for the entire company.

Enforcement of Article 4’s literacy obligations by national authorities begins on 3 August 2026. However, businesses must begin preparing now - getting ahead is the smartest move any organisation can make.

Jonathan’s five step plan for preparing your business includes:

  1. Mapping your AI estate.

  2. Developing targeted AI literacy training.

  3. Reviewing contracts and third party relationships.

  4. Creating internal AI policies.

  5. Engaging the board, and embedding a responsible AI culture.

From avoiding legal risk to staying competitive, AI literacy is no longer optional - it’s a legal and strategic imperative.
